Although we all might want to be on a tropical island there is no need to travel to eat the Mediterranean Diet (MD)! Let's take a look at some benefits eating Mediterranean food.
Why Try the Mediterranean Diet?
The type of foods included in this diet are rich in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. As we have found inflammation and metabolic are primary causes for cancer this diet may play a pivotal role in decreasing cancer rates! It may be beneficial in reducing cancer recurrence and metastases! Other benefits include:
Lowering of lipids
Positively affecting Cancer pathwaysÂ
Positive effects to gut microbiota
Different cancers may benefit from this particular diet. Evidence has shown positive effects of diet on the following Cancers:
Breast: Reduction of only 6% BUT if EXCLUDED alcohol Reduction of Risk goes up to 40%!   Newman et al.,(2019) found that following the MD led to changes in gut microbiota in mammary gland tissue. This suggests there may be  anticancer effects by diet on breast-specific microbiome (Newman et al., 2019)
Prostate- A staggering Reduction of Risk 78%
Colorectal- Reduction of Risk Men 30%, Women 45%
Gastric- Reduction of Risk by 51%
Bladder- 34% Reduction of Risk
Female reproductive- Reduces Risk by 60% for cervical cancer; Reduces Risk by 66% for Endometrial Cancer
Head/Neck- 20% reduction of Risk in Men, 58% Reduction of Risk in Women
Biliary tract- Reduction of risk 41-42%
Lung- In heavy smokers there was a 62% reduction in Lung Cancer Risk for those following the MD
